I have been following VT football for about 14 years now. After our recent loss to Michigan, I am furious, frustrated, and finally motivated enough to post my first blog on blogspot. This blog will concern Virginia Tech football and what Virginia Tech must do to win big games, bowl games, and the national title game.
1. Fundamentals.
This is the single reason why we are called the Chokies. This applies to both the athletes and the coaching staff. After reviewing our losses to Michigan, Alabama, and Boise State, fundamentals is a major factor in these losses.
Concerning athletes, we simply give the opponent too many extra possessions on our side of the 50. With high potent offenses, they are going to get at least get one if not two first downs. This already gives them a field goal unless their kicker really sucks or flukes. Penalties are also a major factor. Stupid personal fouls, roughing the kicker, offsides, holding etc. either negate a great play, make getting 1st downs harder, or extending the opponents possession. Turnovers and stupid penalties are not acceptable if Virginia Tech expects to win big games.
Concerning coaching, too many stupid play calls. An option punt on a 4th and 1? Throwing a vertical for a first when you need 4 yards for a first down? Running a slow back wide on a 3rd and 3? Running a long QB draw with a slow quarterback? COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beamer needs to make more reasonable calls on crucial offensive drives and special teams.
2. Offense
Too many touchdowns are scored by the Virginia Tech offense not by good play calling, but by pure athleticism. Virginia Tech has the most tradition, predictable, uninspired offense I have ever seen by a top 10 team. Let's see.... on big third downs VT usually runs a QB draw with Logan. Let's load the box, especially in the middle, and close on the outside to keep him contained. Well what do you know. VT runs a QB draw and Logan gets nowhere. In big games, these defense have a high football IQ. Call simple plays and it will be a field day. Beamer needs to get ride of Stinespring and hire a coordinator with a good offensive scheme.
3. Beamer
If Beamer doesn't sharpen up, make some tough decisions, and make better calls, I guarantee you the Virginia Tech football program will surely fall off the top 10 if not the top 20. Fans will be tired of losing heartbreaker games and will be no longer willing to travel. In addition, if Bud Foster pursues his dream of a head coaching job, and/or Beamer retires, you can say bye bye to Virginia Tech football for a good while. In addition, we need to play more top teams. We get ridiculed for our strength of schedule. Our future schedules are pathetic. Bowling Green? Really? Really Beamer? Once Pitt and Syracuse join the ACC, we are looking at 3 non conference games. Two of those needs to be top 20 teams and the other one be a team no less than East Carolina. Not to mention, within the next 5 years, East Carolina will be one hell of a football team. I can GUARANTEE you if VT played more top teams on a consistent basis, athletes will better understand the importance of fundamentals and performance.
1 of 2 things needs to happen in order for VT to be a consistent top 10 team.
1. Beamer gets fired and Bud Foster becomes head coach. This will ensure the tenacity of VT defense and Bud Foster is much more competitive than Frank Beamer and will make tougher decisions and pursue higher standards aggressively.
2. Beamer finds a better Offensive Coordinator. Absolutely zero reason for our offensive scheme. Anybody see the WVU vs Clem game? Their offensive formations and play calling were awesome. Screens, mis-direction, and multi-option plays are the bread and butter of WVU offense. That is what we need.
I'm done. Hope you enjoyed.
